Planting Chard

Our chard story began at the University City High School Greenhouse, where Penn student Rebel Gardeners Omar and Daniel planted chard seeds in flats filled with a 50/50 blend of promix and organic compost.

Daniel and Omar are in the Penn ABCS class Biology of Food, and for their placement project volunteer with the Rebel Gardeners once-a-week for the semester. It’s one of the only classes at Penn where you can get credit for analyzing and climbing an apple tree.

We let the chard grow in the greenhouse for about a month, then took it to Eastwick to transplant in our plot.

We’ll start harvesting in a month or so, and look forward to salads and sauteed greens and garlic in the summer.
