John Young is 86 years-old and he was born in Bethlehem , PA. He has been gardening for the pass 35 to 40 years. Mr. Young has had a plot at Eastwick Community Garden for 15 years.

Even though he grows a lot of vegetables , he doesn’t keep them all to himself . Instead he donates them to his church. His grandfather was the one who taught Mr. Young how to garden . “Love what I do,” is always being said by Mr. Young . He gardens everyday , in fact , he states “Thats all I do!”

 

John Young’s Home Grown Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Tomato
  • Corn
  • Lima Beans
  • String Beans
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Brown Rice
  • Basil
  • Balsalmic Vinegar
Step 1: Boil your brown rice
  1. Add 2 cups water for every 1 cup of rice in a boiling pot
  2. Bring water to a boil, put temperature on low and let it boil for 30 minutes
  3. When finished set aside to cool.
Step 2: Wash all of your vegetables

Step 3: Prep all of your vegetables (Corn, Lima Beans, & String Beans)

Step 4: Cut all of your vegetables into fine bits.

Step 5: Add rice to your fresh cut vegetables.

Step 6: Toss completed salad til throughly mixed, enjoy.

Optional: Make your own basil vinaigrette

  1. Add balsamic vinegar to your blender (Add as needed to make a liquid).
  2. Add olive oil to the blender.
  3. Wash your basil and pick the leaves.
  4. Add 2 handfuls of basil into the blender.
  5. Blend it into a nice smooth texture.
  6. Add salt as needed
  7. Mix well
